Yes. this is known issue with some Yanmar's. The voltage drop over the wire does not provide enough power to activate the solenoid. For some reason, repeatedly pushing the start button sometimes works, but it is unreliable. I used 10g wire when I replaced mine. On the Yanmar engine, the manual gives instructions on a break in period for new engines, operations and maintenance of the engine, and anything else you need to know. Yanmar recommends running the engine at load and not letting it loaf along as the cylinders can carbon up and cause excessive wear.
The Yanmar Tach is nothing more than an analog display figital pulse counter. There is a sensor aimed at the edge of the flywheel that counts ring gear teeth. It converts that info to a needle position on the face of the tach. I've never noticed any sort of calibration onn the back. Many after market tachs read an output from the alternator.
