As a rough guide in the early planning phase we normally use 10 12 m2 per student as an average when calculating the required space or capacity. We are again referring to an international standard school with comprehensive facilities.
However, a typical elementary school might measure around 50,000 to 100,000 square feet in total area, with dimensions often around 200 to 300 feet in length and 150 to 200 feet in width....
More than one half (56%) of all education buildings were less than 10,000 square feet. On average, education buildings were 31,100 square feet per building. Education buildings were often located on a campus complex (61%).
The average (mean) high school size across the United states is 752 students. This number I believe is positively skewed, with the median high school size smaller (600 ish), but with a number of urban suburban schools in the 2000 student range pulling the average higher.
Size and Capacity: Average high schools range from 50,000 to 300,000 square feet depending on student capacity (typically 500 2,000 students). Design plexity: Modern schools with specialized facilities, such as theaters and sports complexes, add to cost.
Average national averages of square footage space per student for Canada and the continental United States reveal the following ranges: 70.1 to 111.5 gsf for elementary schools buildings; 81.2 to 154.4 gsf for middle schools buildings; and 101.9 to 160.7 gsf for high schools buildings.
For sound educational reasons the Department of Education maintains its policy of recommending 960 square feet for a standard classroom and 1,350 square feet for kindergarten room.
