Despite being members of the Carnivora order of animals, giant pandas feed on a diet consisting predominantly of plants, in particular bamboo. Most Carnivoran creatures (or carnivores) are meat eaters who use their sharp claws and teeth to catch prey.

As much as 90–98 percent of the panda’s diet consists of the leaves, shoots, and stems of bamboo, a large grass available year round in much of China’s forested regions.

An average sized panda (weighing 100 kg, or about 220 lb) might eat 12 to 15 kg (26 to 33 lb) of bamboo leaves and stems, or 23 to 38 kg (50 to 84 lb) of bamboo shoots per day (Schaller et al. 1985; Pan and Lü 1993; Swaisgood et al. 2020)

The primary component of the giant panda’s diet is bamboo, making up approximately 99% of its total food intake. To meet energy requirements from this low nutrient plant, a panda must consume 20 to 40 kilograms (44 to 90 pounds) of bamboo daily.

It can digest starch and is mostly herbivorous with a diet consisting almost entirely of bamboo and bamboo shoots. The giant panda lives exclusively in six montane regions in a few Chinese provinces at elevations of up to 3,000 m (9,800 ft). It is solitary and gathers only in mating seasons.

Pandas like eating arrow bamboo, golden bamboo, and 'water bamboo', along with about 60 other species. They prefer bamboo roots, shoots, and leaves, especially the juicy and nutritious shoots.

Despite their carnivorous ancestry, pandas have evolved to thrive on a plant based diet, deriving their energy primarily from bamboo. This adaptation is unique among mammals.

Although they belong to the order “carnivora” the panda is primarily a herbivore, eating a diet made up mainly of bamboo leaves and shoots. Pandas will also eat berries, fruit, fungi, grasses, small mammals, birds, eggs and fish.

However, they eat bamboo almost exclusively. They eat both the shoots and leaves of the bamboo plant, and it makes up 99 percent of their diet. Outside of bamboo, pandas do occasionally eat fish, small mammals, or other plants.
