Headwaters in California Most headwaters are either streams of melted snow and ice or springs from overflowing aquifers. The Sacramento River ’s headwater is from a spring at Mt. Shasta City Park while the middle fork of the San Joaquin River ’s headwater is Thousand Island Lake in the Eastern Sierra.
The headwaters of the Sacramento River and its main northern tributaries —the Pit and McCloud rivers — are regulated by Shasta Dam. Other major tributaries — the Feather and American rivers on its south end — and smaller streams are heavily regulated by dams for flood control, water supply, power production and recreation.
From its headwaters in Colorado and Wyoming, the 1,450 mile long river and its tributaries pass through parts of seven states and serves Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming along with 30 tribal nations.
From the headwaters, the river flows through a canyon, collecting Dogtown Creek at Omo Ranch. From there, the water flows through a valley past Outingdale. The 20 mile long South Fork flows northwest along the El Dorado Amador County line before connecting with the Middle Fork.
