M. pacifica is the type species of the genus Magnapinna. It is characterised primarily by its proximal tentacles, which are wider than adjacent arms and bear numerous suckers. M. pacifica was described in 1998 by Michael Vecchione and Richard E. Young based on three specimens.
Magnapinna pacifica is a rare species of bigfin squid in the family Magnapinnidae, distinguished by its gelatinous body, disproportionately large terminal fins that are heart shaped and nearly as long as the mantle, and arms and tentacles that taper into long, slender, vermiform filaments.
The Bigfin Squid (Magnapinna) is a rarely seen cephalopod that has been nicknamed the ”long arm squid”. Bigfin Squids hold their arms perpendicular to their body, creating elbows, standing out from other squids. They have a large fin that makes up about 90% of their mantle length.

Kids Encyclopedia Facts ... The Magnapinna pacifica is a very unique type of deep sea squid. It's also known as a "bigfin squid" because of its unusually large fins. Scientists have only found a few young ones, so there's still a lot to learn about these mysterious creatures that live deep in the ocean. Discovering the Bigfin Squid
During the 1980s, two additional immature specimens were found in the Atlantic (Magnapinna sp. A), and three more were found in the Pacific (Magnapinna pacifica).
M. pacifica is the type species of the genus Magnapinna. It is characterised primarily by its proximal tentacles, which are wider than adjacent arms and bear numerous suckers.
Multiple observations of Bigfin Squid (Magnapinna sp.) in the Great Australian Bight reveal distribution patterns, morphological characteristics, and rarely seen behaviour.
