“Game” is a short story by Donald Barthelme that can be found in his collection Sixty Stories. It’s about two soldiers assigned to monitor a console in an underground bunker, and how they’re affected when they fail to get relieved from the job.

He plays with them, alone, sitting on the floor near the console hour after hour, chanting "onesies, twosies, threesies, foursies" in a precise, well modulated voice, not so loud as to be annoying, not so soft as to allow me to forget.

In a 1982 interview, Barthelme captured the sentiment that charged “Game.” His words could apply to the Cold War, as well as our painful present: “The doomsday clock has been set up a few notches, I gather. The way our present government is talking is absolutely mad.”

A great short story is tightly wound, not one wasted moment, and ‘Game’ is a breathless, claustrophobic, paranoid tale which takes place in a single room in an underground bunker.
