USS Turner Joy (DD 951) is one of 18 Forrest Sherman class destroyers of the United States Navy. She was named for Admiral Charles Turner Joy USN (1895–1956). missioned in 1959, she spent her entire career in the Pacific.

Turner Joy returned to Long Beach on 16 November. Over the next 18 months she completed an extensive overhaul and participated in numerous 1st Fleet exercises along the California coast. In October 1961 the destroyer was transferred to DesDiv 191 of DesRon 19 and assumed duty as flagship for both.

Following a pre shakedown goodwill cruise to Central and South American ports and shakedown out of San Diego, Turner Joy began, early in 1960, duty as flagship both of Destroyer Squadron (DesRon) 13 and Destroyer Division (DesDiv) 131.

USS Turner Joy, a 2850 ton Forrest Sherman Hull class destroyer, was built at Seattle, Washington. After commissioning in August 1959 she cruised down the Pacific coast to visit South America.

Following a pre shakedown goodwill cruise to Central and South American ports and shakedown out of San Diego, Turney Joy began, early in 1960, duty as flagship both of Destroyer Squadron (DesRon) 13 and Destroyer Division (DesDiv) 131.

This ship is famous for being one of the main ships involved in the Gulf of Tonkin Incident, serving as the trigger for the Vietnam War. She was decommissioned in 1982 and serves as a museum in Bremerton, WA since 1992.

Turner Joy’s distinctive service included a double duty role as flagship for Destroyer Squadron 13 and Destroyer Division 131 with several tours in the Pacific. She also stood air sea rescue duty near the Marianas Islands for President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s visit to several Asian nations.

The USS Turner Joy, along with the USS Maddox, were at the center of the 1964 Tonkin Gulf Incident, in which the two destroyers purportedly came under attack by North Vietnamese torpedo boats while sailing in the strait between Hainan Island and the coastline of Nghệ An and Hà Tĩnh provinces.
